Sailing 101: Where and How to Get Into Sailing

Sailing 101: Where and How to Get Into Sailing

At Albatross Designs, we live and breathe everything ocean. We are sailors and surfers at our core, and we find so much joy in sharing the wonder of the ocean with our community. Albatross Designs was actually born and first bloomed on a sailboat. As our operations grew and we settled on land (but certainly not too far from the water), we have remained dedicated to respecting, enjoying, and honoring this amazing wonder of nature every single day.

Sailing can look like a pretty intimidating activity to get into. But if you live near a "sailable" body of water and you've ever considered giving it a try, here are a few tips to help you take the plunge.

It's easy to think that you need to own a boat, come from a sailing family, or possess the knowledge of an old mariner before you can get into sailing. But that's simply not true. Many sailors begin with nothing more than a healthy dose of curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Getting into sailing means more than starting a new hobby—it means finding a community. Sailors are some of the most welcoming people you'll meet, and many are eager to share their knowledge with newcomers who are excited to get out on the water.

  1. A great place to start is by spending a little time around your local waterfront. Get a lay of the land, and find out what kind of existing businesses or organizations might be able to help you get out on the water. These might be charter companies, yacht clubs, sailing schools, or community sailing organizations.

  2. Youtube and books are amazing resources to get more familiar with the basics of sailing. Learning on your own time will help you feel more comfortable and optimize your time once you make it out on the water.

  3. If available, look for local sailing charters, which would give you the opportunity to go on a sail for an hour or two. You get to enjoy the scenery, observe the motions and ask questions to the crew.

  4. If it is accessible to you, sign up for a sailing course at your local sailing school. Beginner lessons or introductory sails might be just what you need to dive into it further.

  5. Find your local yacht club and figure out when the next “beer can” race is. Often very friendly, with lots of boaters needing crew, you are likely to find an opportunity to go out on the water on someone’s boat and learn the ropes. You don't need any prior experience—just a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn.

In general, and like with everything else in life, you might be surprised by how quickly opportunities begin to appear once you put yourself out there.

For us, every day on the water reinforces why protecting our oceans matters. The more time we spend sailing, surfing, and exploring the coastline, the more connected we feel to these incredible places. That connection inspires everything we do at Albatross Designs and reminds us why caring for our oceans is so important.

So if you've been waiting for the right moment to give sailing a try, consider this your invitation. Sign up for an introductory lesson, volunteer as crew for a local race, or simply stop by your neighborhood marina and start a conversation. Every experienced sailor was once exactly where you are now, taking that very first step.

You don't need to own a boat. You don't need years of experience. You don't need to know every knot before you leave the dock.

All you need is a little curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the courage to catch the wind.
